American thrash metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, later rounded out by guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Cliff Burton. Their first three albums -- Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning and 1986's Master of Puppets -- were all produced with Danish engineer Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen.
