English synth-pop duo Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys formed OMD in Wirral, Merseyside in 1978, debuting with the electro hit 'Electricity' before expanding to a full band lineup with Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper. Their third album, Architecture & Morality (1981), fused Mellotron choirs and real horns with drum machines and synths to become a defining early-80s synth-pop landmark, though their experimental follow-up Dazzle Ships (1983) initially alienated the mainstream audience they'd built.
