Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 (Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bill Berry), R.E.M. became the flagship band of American college rock with their jangly, mumbled-vocal 1983 debut Murmur, co-produced on a shoestring budget by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon after an ill-fated 'audition' session with a more conventional producer nearly derailed the band's confidence. Deliberately avoiding synthesizers and studio polish at a time when both dominated the charts, the band built a devoted, DIY-minded fanbase that eventually carried them from tiny Southern clubs to stadium headliners over the following decade.
