English synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977, best known for their 1981 album Dare and its Christmas #1 single 'Don't You Want Me.' After a 1980 lineup split, frontman Philip Oakey rebuilt the group around Joanne Catherall, Susan Ann Sulley and producer Martin Rushent, pivoting from avant-garde electronics to polished synth-pop that helped define the genre's early-80s commercial breakthrough.
