Bruce Springsteen · Rock

Recorded at New York's Power Station with the E Street Band across 1982-1984, drawing several songs (including the title track) from the same demo sessions that produced the stark solo album Nebraska; engineer Toby Scott recalled the take as sounding 'sensational' from the first exploding snare hit, though producers Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin and Steven Van Zandt wrestled with dozens of alternate mixes (Bob Clearmountain ultimately mixed the record) before settling the sequence. The sessions were enormously prolific, yielding 70-90 recorded songs, and the finished album spun off a record-tying seven top-10 US singles, cementing Springsteen's arena-rock breakthrough of the decade.
