Marking Dylan's return to secular songwriting after his born-again Christian trilogy, Infidels was recorded at the Power Station in New York in spring 1983 with Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler co-producing and Mick Taylor (ex-Rolling Stones) on slide guitar, plus Sly and Robbie (Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) on the rhythm section. The sessions were famously contentious -- engineer Neil Dorfsman recalled Dylan sabotaging his own momentum, and Knopfler left early for a Dire Straits tour, leaving Dylan to finish the final mix himself. Fans and critics still lament that 'Blind Willie McTell,' considered by many a career highlight, was cut from the final sequence just before mastering.
