Prince's soundtrack to his own film debut was tracked live at First Avenue in Minneapolis on August 3, 1983 (engineered by David Z, who'd co-produced Prince's earliest Warner Bros. demos) before the reels went to Sunset Sound in L.A. for overdubs and mixing with engineer David Leonard and Peggy McCreary; the title track's famous strings were arranged by Lisa Coleman's brother David and cut with vintage Telefunken/Neumann mics. 'When Doves Cry' broke new ground by stripping out the bassline entirely, a choice Prince made alone in the studio against convention. The album spent 24 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
